Jill Borland brings a background in community development and extensive strategic relationship management experience to the role of Manager - Healthy Families Spreydon-Heathcote.
"Jill is passionate about active lifestyles and interested in the role of sport and recreation in community development, wellbeing and mental health,” says Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon.
Healthy Families NZ is a nationwide initiative aiming to improve people’s health by challenging targeted communities (Spreydon-Heathcote in Christchurch) to think differently about the underlying causes of poor health, and strive to make changes in our schools, workplaces, sports clubs, marae and other key community settings to help people make healthier choices. Sport and physical activity is a key component of this.
Jill recognised the opportunity to lead a motivated, talented team and also strategically partner key organisations, influencing the health and wellbeing of Sport Canterbury communities.
Jill’s previous experience with Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority supported cross-sector innovation with a focus on recovery, and community and organisational resilience.
Originally from Southland, Jill was born into a high-performing family where sport and physical activity across multiple codes was a major part of life.
She came to Canterbury in 1995 and has represented New Zealand in ice sports. Jill’s other interests include travel, house renovating, dancing, netball, softball and yoga.
With a professional coaching career spanning nearly three decades, from community coaching to international high performance experience, Jill is quick to recall her ‘quirkiest’ sporting achievement: “Teaching ice skating in the communities of Ladakh, India.”
Currently working toward a Masters of Business Administration at the University of Canterbury, with a specific interest in leadership and change, Jill holds postgraduate qualifications in secondary teaching (physical education and health) and event management. Her accreditation in behavioural change and psychometric evaluation reflects a strong interest in organisational development.
