Calling All Tough Kids!

 MASH Tough Kid

If the year 2020 has added new meaning to the term “Tough Kid,” there may be no better time to celebrate the resilience of our tamariki than with a high-energy end of term challenge – and the date is set.

18/19 November 2020

Sport Canterbury first delivered the MASH Tough Kid event in 2012, when the region’s landscape was transformed by natural disaster, and sporting opportunities for young people were severely impacted.

Over the years, the event has reached thousands primary school students across the Canterbury region, from Diamond Harbour to Hanmer Springs. The benefits of participating are vast – a boost to confidence, connecting with friends, and evidence that being active can be – very simply – heaps of fun.

“The accessible nature of the event and supportive atmosphere means that we see hundreds and hundreds of children sign up – who may not have participated in traditional sporting codes,” says Sport Canterbury Chief Executive Julyan Falloon.

Given that many schools and students rely on the event every year as a source of end-of-term relief – particularly in the year of the pandemic, Falloon’s team has partnered with Primary Sports Canterbury to make the event sustainable.

Lyn Miles of Primary Sports Canterbury is looking forward to the opportunity to help bring one of New Zealand’s most highly anticipated participation events – to even more kids this year.

“Many of our schools have already shown interest, we have had six schools register their students since entries opened last Friday.”

“We are excited to provide another event for such a large number of tamariki,” she adds.
