Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa – applications for funding now open

 Healthy Families

Applications are open for Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa to fund community-based programmes and projects targeting children and young people delivering play, active recreation and sport experiences in Ōtautahi.

Tū Manawa has been developed to ensure all tamariki and rangatahi have opportunities to be active in their communities regardless of where they live or personal circumstances.

Sport Canterbury manages Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa on behalf of Sport NZ for the Christchurch community – since being physically active is critical for improving the health of communities, the Healthy Families Ōtautahi team is strongly behind this kaupapa.

Tū Manawa has funded multiple initiatives in the Ōtautahi region over the years, including Skate The CityWalking NetballTe Ora Heke ō Mawhera (a recreational surfing programme for female rangatahi), the Woolston Boxing Youth Programme and MoveAbility – a gymnastics class specific to children with physical impairments.Sophie Valibus, Tū Manawa Lead, says that Tū Manawa funding is so important as it is giving our tamariki and rangatahi opportunities to experience play, active recreation and sport experiences which they may otherwise not get to do. “Tū Manawa funding helps overcome barriers that may prevent organizations delivering these awesome opportunities which can be life changing for our young people. It’s so heart-warming to hear the stories of the positive impact of these experiences. Anything that breaks down barriers and gives an awesome positive experience is a real win - not only for their physical health but also can be hugely beneficial for our young people’s mental health”.

We encourage groups who prioritise initiatives for those living with disabilities, higher deprivation communities, or girls and young women groups to apply - applications for the major funding round close Sunday July 30, 2023. There will be two Fast Fund rounds in November 2023, and February 2024 – more details on these will be available closer to the time.
