The story of Tough Kid

Since its inception in 2012, the Tough Kid event has become a remarkable testament to community spirit - providing thousands of children with a fun and engaging way to get active.

Tough Kid promotes physical fitness and also fosters a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among participants.

Over time, the event has become one of the most important primary school events in the South Island - wrapping up the year and leaving a lasting memory on the lives of countless students who have taken part.

What began as a one-day event at Riccarton Racecourse has now evolved into a two-day fun-filled obstacle course of activations, fun and colour at South New Brighton Park.

The decision to relocate to east Ōtautahi Christchurch in 2015 came from the need to expand, with the event's new location a strategic move, driven by the desire to revitalise a part of the city that had felt the social effects of the 2012 earthquakes.

South New Brighton Park has now become the home for this event, offering abundant space for tamariki to come together for a dynamic obstacle playground of fun each year.

As Sport Canterbury's Lead Community Connector, Isaac Sutherland puts it: “Tough Kid isn't about competition, it’s two days filled with fun and physical activity in disguise.

“We don't expect star athletes; we encourage tamariki to put on their house colours, explore diverse terrains, run with friends and mingle with students from other schools.”

Tough Kid isn't just about the obstacle course and the children taking part, it's also about connecting with the community.

Local police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand set up activation stations at the event village, adding extra excitement beyond the course.

Various organisations also come to lend a hand, such as Eastern Community Sport and Recreation, Canterbury Cricket, Kiwanis, Rotary Clubs and more, guiding and cheering on the young participants.

When the students triumphantly cross the finish line, they are rewarded with a refreshing piece of fruit and a certificate to acknowledge their efforts.

Over the years, Tough Kid has become an event shaped around community engagement, inclusiveness and the shared value of enjoyable physical activity among Waitaha Canterbury's tamariki.

All students from years 3 to 8 are welcome to enter this inclusive event (including those with disabilities), regardless of their ability.
