About

Established in 2017, the Live Stronger for Longer project assists community exercise providers in offering strength & balance classes for older adults. These classes enhance physical abilities, prevent falls and help maintain independence.

Improving strength and balance is one of the best ways for older adults to reduce their falling risk. The Live Stronger for Longer initiative, implemented by ACC across Aotearoa New Zealand, is currently delivered by Sport Canterbury in the Waitaha Canterbury, Te Tai Poutini West Coast and South Canterbury regions.

Sport Canterbury promotes exercise classes to health professionals and older adults and supports approved exercise providers by regularly attending classes to ensure they are safe and appropriate for older adults. Sport Canterbury helps to establish, educate and promote these classes to ensure all adults have appropriate access to an approved exercise class in their neighbourhood.

To attend an approved strength & balance class, participants need to be:

  • Aged 65 years or older (55+ for Māori & Pacific Peoples) or
  • A moderate to high fall risk or
  • Feel they need to improve their strength & balance.

When done effectively, evidence shows a 29 percent decrease in fall rates.

If you wish to attend a strength & balance or know someone who will benefit from our service, please use the referral forms below.

Stay On Your Feet
