Canterbury Hockey Finals Weekend

The Hockey community in Ōtautahi are thrilled to have Canterbury Hockey’s Finals Weekend, once again in August, with the sport experiencing a relatively uninterrupted season this winter.

Due to the pandemic, last season was affected by various interruptions which pushed the Finals Weekend to September.

This year, hundreds of spectators and supporters will converge on Ngā Puna Wai to watch the top teams in Ōtautahi battle it out on the turf – something that wasn’t possible last year due to the various restrictions.

“Canterbury Hockey is super excited for Final’s Weekend which is the culmination of a fantastic season of Hockey across all our grades. It’s especially nice to have a full unbroken season of Hockey after the last couple of years,” says Canterbury Hockey’s Lucy Corrigan.

The Connetics Secondary School Premier League is kicking things off tonight (Friday) with Christchurch Girl’s High School 1st XI taking on St Margaret’s College 1st XI in the girl’s final, while Timaru Boy’s High School is facing off against St Andrew’s College 1st XI in the boy’s game.

Saturday will see the Signbiz Premier League finals played, with the Marist Mermaids taking on the 2021 champions, the Harewood Huntresses in the women’s grade, while in the men’s grade, Carlton Redcliff’s will verse this year’s round robin winners, the Marist Musketeers.

“This should be a great game as Marist and Carlton Redcliffs have been battling it out at the top of the table all season,” says Corrigan.

Also on Saturday, the Division 1 Grade Carlton Redcliffs will play against the Southern Sluggers in the men’s grade and against Marist in the women’s grade.

The fun is also set to continue Sunday with the Platinum Youth Grade and the Sunday League also holding their finals. All games on Ngā Puna Wai Turf 1 are live streamed via CelloSport.

It has been a great season for the sport and players are grateful for the opportunity to play the game they love.
